Istra and Kvarner
The Istrian penninsula, situated at the far west of Croatia, is the largest penninsula on the Adriatic, covering roughly 3000km2.
The area had been populated since pre-history on the crossroads of three great european cultures: Slavic, Germanic and Romance – all of this still visible through traditional customs, speech and culture. Many foreign media presents Istria as a"must see" area, which is not only known for its tourism , but also for its wine and olive oil production, which are already mentioned in Roman written sources. This is also the cradle of the Slow food tradition in Croatia, so we can say that the visitor will find pleasure both for the eye and the palate.
The tourist region of Kvarner is between the Istrian penninsula and the Croatian coastal region and is considered to be the most versatile areas in Croatia. The two larges islands of the Adriatic are both special in their own way. While Krk is the island of the glagolithic – old croatian – script, the cultural gem – the franciscan monastery island Košljun, and the tipical Vrbnik Žlahtina wine, Cres boasts with great biodiversity that can compete with whole countries of Europe. Apart from the islands we have the mountain region of Gorski Kotar, so the visitor can take a short ride from the beach to the mountain forest.
